Artis—Naples This Winter: Why the Weeks Before February 15 Matter Most

October 29, 2026

Most of the 2026-27 Artis—Naples season coverage leads with March 2027, when Alexander Shelley conducts the Naples Philharmonic through all nine Beethoven symphonies. Two Baker Museum exhibitions close by Valentine's Day. The Cleveland Orchestra plays two January programs in Franz Welser-Möst's final season as its music director. The Munich Philharmonic makes its Naples debut on February 15. For anyone living in Pelican Bay, where the campus sits, the season to plan around runs from now until mid-February. March is the encore.

The museum's deadlines are already set

Start with what is closing, because this part of the calendar can't move.

Linling Lu: Fugue in 3 Voices closes January 3, 2027. It's in the Springborn Gallery. Lu paints circular canvases of concentric color rings, with the shades chosen in response to classical music. For this installation she made new works inspired by three composers on the Naples Philharmonic's Masterworks programs: Dvořák, Stravinsky and Beethoven. It's the one museum show tied directly to what's happening in Hayes Hall, and it closes two months before the Beethoven cycle begins.

The Surrealist International: Fifty Years of Dreams runs through February 14, 2027, on the third floor of The Baker Museum. Everything in it comes from the collection of Tate in the United Kingdom. The famous names are here: Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Joan Miró, Max Ernst, Leonora Carrington, Dorothea Tanning, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp. So are artists the museum says deserve to be better known, including Kati Horna, Malangatana Ngwenya, Osamu Shiihara and Lionel Wendt.

Two new shows open while those are still up. Baron Wolman: Capturing the Sound of an Era opens December 5 and runs through June 13, 2027. Wolman was Rolling Stone's first chief photographer, and the show was organized with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It includes his portraits of Miles Davis, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones. Louise Nevelson: Dawn to Dusk opens February 13 and covers her career from 1929 to 1985. It has early paintings, the painted wood constructions she's best known for, cast paper reliefs and her handmade jewelry.

The two big shows overlap for just two days. Surrealism closes February 14 and Nevelson opens February 13. If you want to see both in one visit, those are the days.

The longer-running exhibits give you room later. Florida Contemporary 2026-27, with work by Dustin Harewood, Nicario Jiménez-Quispe, Savannah Magnolia and Anastasia Samoylova, is in the Hayes Hall galleries and The Blair Foundation Gallery through June 27, 2027. The permanent-collection show There & Here has no end date.

November and December build toward Wolman's opening

The performance calendar starts slowly, then speeds up around Thanksgiving.

Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly opens the Pops series with Mandy Gonzalez Sings Broadway, November 3 through 7. Sunday, November 8 is free. The fall Community Day celebration and the Youth Symphonia fall concert are both listed as free admission that day. David Foster and Katharine McPhee play with the Naples Philharmonic on November 16. A Magical Cirque Christmas follows the next night, November 17.

The Pelican Bay Foundation's own calendar falls between those dates. Its Welcome Back Weekend runs November 13 through 15, with a members-only beach event at Sandbar on Friday that requires registration, racquets activities Saturday and an open gathering at North Beach on Sunday, according to the November issue of the Foundation's Post, which covers the Friday beach event and the weekend schedule.

Thanksgiving week belongs to Hamilton, which plays Hayes Hall November 24 through 29. Thanksgiving Day itself is skipped. The schedule jumps from Wednesday the 25th to Friday the 27th, with matinees on Saturday and Sunday. The Baker Museum is also closed on Thanksgiving.

The first week of December is the busiest stretch before January:

  • December 2: Daniil Trifonov solo recital.
  • December 3: Handel's Messiah with the Naples Philharmonic in Hayes Hall.
  • December 5: Wolman opens, with a talk titled "Baron Wolman and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame" at 11 a.m. in the Ubben Signature Event Space. Naples Ballet's Nutcracker with the Philharmonic plays that evening, then twice more on December 6.
  • December 11: "The Sound of Color," a 10 a.m. conversation between Alexander Shelley and Linling Lu, three weeks before her show closes.

Holiday Pops wraps up the year with five performances, December 17 through 20.

January is the crowded month

This is the part of the season that's hardest to make up later. All of these are in Hayes Hall, and every date but the last falls while the Surrealism show is still open at the museum.

Feb. 15

Some background on these dates. The Foster and O'Hara evening is a tribute to Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett. Cleveland's two programs include Beethoven's Fifth and Schubert's Sixth, and they're the orchestra's last Naples visits under Welser-Möst. The Munich date is that orchestra's first appearance in Naples, led by Chief Conductor Lahav Shani. Ticket availability changes quickly in January, so check the Artis events page before you plan dinner around a show.

Munich plays the day after Surrealism closes. If January fills up, February 13 and 14 are your last chance at the Tate show, and Munich follows on Monday, February 15.

The free nights line up with the deadlines

The Baker Museum's free Art After Hours evenings this season fall on November 25, December 30, January 27 and February 24. Set against the closing dates, each one has a job.

  1. December 30 is the last free night to see Linling Lu, four days before her show closes.
  2. January 27 is the last free night for The Surrealist International. The February 24 evening comes ten days after it closes.
  3. February 24 is a good free night for Nevelson and Wolman, which will both still be up.

On regular days, the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. It's closed Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Adult admission is $10. Full-time students and active military with ID pay $5, and children 17 and under get in free, as do Friends of Artis—Naples. SNAP EBT cardholders pay $1 each, for up to four adults per card. Bank of America, Merrill and Bank of America Private Bank cardholders get one free general admission on the first full weekend of each month with a qualifying card and photo ID.

There's also a way to fit the museum into a concert night. Tickets to select performances come with same-day Baker Museum admission and extended hours through the Music and Museum program. If one of those performances falls before February 14, you can see the Surrealism show and a concert on the same ticket. Check the admission page to see which performances are included.

March is the encore

The Beethoven cycle is a big deal. Artis—Naples is marking 200 years since the composer's death, and Shelley leads all nine symphonies with programs spread across March 2027, including March 4, 6, 18, 19 and 20. WGCU's season preview led with the cycle for good reason. Itzhak Perlman's recital on March 11 falls in the same month. On March 20, the museum opens The Long View: From Conservation to Sustainability, a show of works from the Bank of America Collection that runs through August 15.

I've lived down the road from this campus since 2002, and planning a winter around Hayes Hall and The Baker Museum is one of my favorite parts of the year.
